Hardware

Black Tie & Tails is a Linux-based Beowulf cluster composed of the following hardware:

8 Intel Pentium^TM based systems
48 Megs of memory per computer
1 gigabyte sized hard drive per computer
10/100 PCI network cards
10/100 Mbs Ethernet switch

The cluster is controlled through a master computer. The master computer is the only computer with a monitor and keyboard. All other computers are only be accessed via the master computer. The computers are linked using Ethernet and a 10/100 Mbs switch, which is device that allows all connected computers to transfer data simultaneously at full band width. This keeps each computer only one step away from one another. This, combined with running a switch at 100 Mbs, is designed to give a performance increase.

Software

The cluster runs the following software:

The master computer, using various LAM commands, controls the cluster. There will also be a monitoring program on computer one to observe the performance of the computers in the cluster. Authorized personnel are also be able to access the cluster from outside the USGS to run parallel programs.
