A Lithium Ion Battery should not be used in the design since it does not come in standard sizes such as a 9 volt battery size. This fact is due to the extreme danger of charging them in rechargers designed for other battery types such as NiMH. However, lithium Ion batteries are extremely efficient for their size and can store a charge for several months. They come at a higher cost and higher danger than other rechargeable batteries since they are manufactured in less quantity and have the potential to ignite if over charged or charged in properly.

Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) Vs. Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) Rechargeable Batteries
A NiCd battery allows for a faster discharge rate which is ideal for surges of current like in the case of activating a solenoid. The shelf life of a NiMH battery depletes 10% faster than NiCd when not connected to a circuit which is applicable for the seasonal irrigation systems. The disadvantage of a NiCd versus a NiMH battery is the higher cost and toxicity of the chemicals. A NiCH battery can last up to 1000 charge/discharge cycles and generally has 100% more capacity than NiCd batteries. A technician at Energizer recommends NiMH rechargeable batteries for this specific application due to their capacity, non-toxicity, and availability. The technician also stated that NiMH batteries are capable of producing the discharge rate needed for the application.
