The 2024-25 Timber-Strong Design Build Competition gave civil engineering students an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world timber structural design and construction. Focused on designing and building a sustainable, visually appealing, and structurally sound two-story, light-framed wood structure, the event culminated at the Intermountain Southwest Student Symposium (ISWS) hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson from April 10–12, 2025. AstroJacks Engineering, representing Northern Arizona University’s ASCE Student Chapter, not only competed—but swept the competition, earning 1st Place Overall at the 2025 ASCE Timber-Strong Design-Build Competition and 1st Place in BIM Modeling. We completed our build in record time, and were praised for having the cleanest and most organized site. With thoughtful design inspired by Flagstaff’s San Francisco Peaks and a commitment to sustainability using donated scrap lumber from HomeCo, our ski lodge-themed structure stood out as a symbol of innovation and teamwork. This victory marks a major milestone as we were the first team to win in a major competition for NAU's ASCE Student Chapter and highlights the dedication, creativity, and engineering excellence of our team.
